What should I use?

The two main categories of skin-care acids are alpha-hydroxy-acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy-acids (BHAs). Both chemically exfoliate skin to remove dead surface skin cells and impurities, but there are differences between the two. AHAs are water soluble and help remove the surface layer of skin for a brighter, more even complexion.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA):

  • What it does: Hydrates the skin by binding to water molecules.
  • Best age to start: Around 20.
  • Signs you need it: When you start noticing fine lines under your eyes.
  • Hydrates the skin, Glass Skin Vibes.

Retinol:

  • What it does: Stimulates elastin and collagen production.
  • Best age to start: Around 25 (when elastin production slows down).
  • Signs you need it: When you notice dynamic wrinkles (lines that appear when muscles contract), such as frown lines, crow’s feet, or laughter lines.
  • Also great for Acne prone skin and break outs

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid):

  • What it does: Provides antioxidant protection, brightens skin, and promotes collagen synthesis.
  • Best age to start: Any age.
  • Signs you need it: Dull complexion, uneven skin tone, or sun damage.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3):

  • What it does: Reduces redness, minimizes pores, and improves skin texture.
  • Best age to start: Any age.
  • Signs you need it: Oily skin, enlarged pores, or redness.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs):

  • What they do: Exfoliate, moisturize, and stimulate collagen production.
  • Common types: Glycolic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids.
  • Signs you need it: Dull skin that needs rejuvenating.

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs):

  • What they do: Exfoliate, unclog pores, and reduce acne.
  • Common type: Salicylic acid.
  • Signs that you need it: Oily Skin, Active break outs, blemish prone skin.

SPF

A sunscreen with an SPF of 30, when used as directed, prevents 97% of UVB rays from reaching your skin. It’s important to remember that while higher SPFs offer more protection, they don’t last any longer than lower numbers, so you need to reapply them just as often.
